The difference between an out and a run can come down to mere milliseconds. So, how can you ensure you're executing this play to perfection?

Your Five-Step Guide to a Perfect Plate Play

  1. Find the Balance Point: Begin with establishing a balance point. Imagine you're surfing. Position your hips backward, and your foot out, pointed directly to the side. This is the stance you will be in when you go to throw, so. you want to make sure you’re body knows how to set up the throw correctly.
  2. Transitioning from Running to Sliding: Transitioning is key. As you make your approach, think of joining your heels. This move will help you glide seamlessly into a slide as you approach the ball.
  3. Practice the Slide Without Touching the Ground!: This is where the fun comes in! Try to see how far you can slide without letting any part of your body, aside from your legs, touch the ground. It's a great way to refine your technique and also a fantastic drill to build muscle memory.
  4. Approach from the Right Side: Always approach the ball on the right side. This positioning allows you a clearer line of sight and a smoother transition to throw the ball to the plate.
  5. Plant and Throw: Once you’ve secured the ball, plant your foot firmly on the ground and deliver a solid, uphill throw to ensure the runner is out.
