Tips for High School Baseball Tryouts
Nov 27, 2024High school baseball tryouts can be nerve-wracking, but they’re also your chance to showcase not just your skills but your attitude, energy, and coachability.
Coaches are evaluating more than just how well you hit, field, or throw—they're looking for intangible qualities that make you a great teammate and player.
Here are three simple but powerful tips to help you stand out and make a lasting impression during tryouts.
1. Don’t Walk Anywhere
Coaches are always watching, even when you think they aren’t. Most say, “Your tryout starts when you show up.”
Walking during a tryout can send the message that you’re not hustling or taking the opportunity seriously, even if that isn’t true. Instead:
- Run and hustle to your position.
- Jog back to the dugout.
- Show urgency and enthusiasm in everything you do.
Your effort level reflects your commitment to the team, so make sure it’s clear you’re there to work hard.
2. Maintain Great Body Language, Especially After Mistakes
Mistakes happen—even the best players make errors. What matters most is how you respond.
- Avoid slumping your shoulders, throwing your glove, or showing visible frustration.
- Instead, stay calm, confident, and ready for the next play.
- Use positive body language to show resilience and mental toughness. Keep your chin up!
Coaches are looking for players who can stay composed under pressure and inspire confidence in their teammates.
3. Have Fun and Show Big Energy
One of the easiest ways to stand out is to bring infectious energy to the field. Not only do you have to be a good player, but a good teammate and leader also.
- Smile often—positivity is contagious.
- Cheer on your teammates and lift others up, even during drills or games.
- A great attitude not only helps you play better but also shows coaches you’re someone they want in the dugout.
Remember, baseball is supposed to be fun, and your love for the game should shine through.
