How to Back Pick to 1B Like Yadier Molina

throwing Aug 26, 2023

Back picking, a crucial move for catchers, can transform the game in an instant. When done right, it's a thing of beauty; think of Yadier Molina's seamless executions. So, if you've ever wondered how to emulate one of the best in the business, this is for you.

Before diving in, a brief introduction for those unfamiliar with me. I'm Anj Bourgeois, founder of Catching Made Simple. My mission is to empower catchers with the tools they need to master their craft. From my transition from infielder to catcher in college, I've immersed myself in the art of catching and aim to share that knowledge with enthusiasts like you.

If you haven’t already, you can take the catching scorecard to see how you stack up.

The Three Keys to Perfecting Your Back Pick

1. Choose the Right Pitch:

The first step is identifying the ideal pitch. This would preferably be a ball on the catcher's throwing side, making the turn and throw smoother and more efficient.

2. Initiate the Turn:

Once you’ve got the ball, it’s time to set your body for the throw. Start turning your body, and if you're older or looking for more power in the throw, you can even drop your right foot back. This position not only provides stability but also aligns you perfectly for a swift and straight throw.

3. Push and Fire:

Now, push off that back foot and let your hips do the heavy lifting. Channeling power from your hips ensures a potent and accurate throw.

How to Tag the Runner Out at 1B on the Back Pick

In an ideal world, you'd get in front of the bag and tag back. However, unless you're holding the runner on, that might not always be feasible. More often, you'll find yourself catching and tagging straight down. So, remember to adjust accordingly and always aim for efficiency.
