Ditching the "Touch the Fence" Throwing Technique

throwing Sep 29, 2023

We've all been there – being taught certain techniques that have been passed down through generations, seemingly tried and true. "Touch the fence" when you're throwing is one such drill many of us grew up with. But upon deeper understanding, this drill is not the best to rely on.

Ever taught to touch the fence while throwing? Rethink it! πŸš«πŸ€” Why? Stronger throws come from shoulder alignment, not over-extension. πŸ’ͺ Pitchers and outfielders can go lower with their arm slot, but still want to lead with their elbow🀝🏼 Don't just take my word—watch the pros do it. πŸ‘€

Why It's Not Ideal

The primary issue with the "touch the fence" drill is the position it puts your hand in: extended well beyond the body. This over-extension can decrease power and accuracy. Instead, for a more powerful and controlled throw, the ideal position is closer to the shoulder, using the strength of the body's core and rotational power.

For catchers and infielders, this position is crucial. It allows for a more direct and quick motion – essential for those rapid throws that need to be precise.

Pitchers and outfielders may adopt a slightly different arm slot, dropping that arm a little bit lower. However, even in these cases, the principle remains: the elbow should lead the throw. By doing this, the throw is more connected, deriving power from the entire body rather than just the arm.

Learning from the Pros

If you're skeptical, just turn to the big leagues. Watch your favorite baseball player in action and observe their technique. You'll notice that the elbow leads, ensuring a connected, powerful throw.

The Takeaway

While old-school drills and cues have their value, it's always a good idea to observe and adapt. Catchers, ensure you don't get stuck in outdated modes – adapt and perfect your form for the best performance.
