The Catcher's Triple Threat Position

stances Aug 28, 2023

Baseball, like any sport, has nuances that can dramatically elevate one's game, and the catcher's position is replete with them. Drawing parallels to basketball's triple threat, where a player can seamlessly shoot, pass, and dribble, catchers too have their own version of this.

If you're new here, allow me to introduce myself. I'm Anj Bourgeois, the founder of Catching Made Simple. From my early days transitioning to the catcher's position, I've developed a passion for teaching the subtleties of this role and sharing the insights that can make or break a game.

@catchingmadesimple Just like basketball players, catchers have their own triple threat position ๐Ÿ€โšพ๏ธ Offer that flat target, then shift down into your prepitch. From there? Receive, block, and throw ๐Ÿ”ฅ Catchers, always be ready in your triple threat position๐Ÿ’ช #catching #kobe #triplethreat โ™ฌ Fighter (Instrumental) - ROKKA

Unlocking the Triple Threat Position for Catchers

  1. Present a Flat Target: Begin by offering the pitcher a clear, flat target. This facilitates a more accurate pitch and sets the foundation for the ensuing moves.
  2. Transition to the Triple Threat: After presenting the target, it's time to bring the glove down to the triple threat position, or your prepitch. It’s from this position that the magic happens.
  3. Threefold Ability - Receive, Block, Throw: From this position, a catcher can seamlessly:
    • Receive: Efficiently and cleanly catch the ball back to the zone.
    • Block: Keep balls in front, not allowing any to the backstop.
    • Throw: Be ready to launch the ball.

Catchers, implementing this triple threat position into your muscle memory is non-negotiable. It streamlines your actions and puts you in the optimal stance to execute any play.

Next Steps to Perfecting Your Triple Threat Stance

Just as basketball players have mastered their game's nuances, catchers must perfect this triple threat position to excel behind the plate.

To aid in this journey, Catching Made Simple offers an array of dedicated courses and coaching sessions focused on the various facets of catching.
